A database architect (also called data architect or data engineer) designs databases, data warehouses, and data pipelines. They decide how data is structured, stored, secured, and shared.
The Reality: Your designs shape how the whole organization uses data for years. It takes deep experience and constant learning.
Your Responsibilities:

8:30 AM — Review a data model for a new reporting system.
10:00 AM — Meet analysts about what data they need.
11:30 AM — Design a data pipeline.
12:30 PM — Lunch.
1:30 PM — Evaluate a cloud data warehouse.

4:00 PM — Document the design.
Big-picture design work with data.
Usually a bachelor's degree plus several years of experience. Most architects start as DBAs, developers, or data analysts.

What that means: Very high pay, even at the lower end. Most workers have years of experience.
Jobs in North Dakota: North Dakota does not publish job projections for this career because it is so small. Nationally, jobs are expected to grow about 9% from 2024 to 2034 (much faster than average), with about 4,000 openings a year.
Outlook: Strong nationally, but few jobs in ND. Many roles are remote.
